The U.S. use to be an isolationist country. After WWI, WWII and during the Cold War, the isolationists were moved aside. WWII killed 1/4 of the world's population alone.

Europe was the ones that use to be all over the place and the British use to brag that the sun never set on the British Empire. Much of the world countries were former European colonies. After WWII and Europe completely thrashed, the remaining colonies started to declare their independence.

During the Cold War, the U.S. felt like the Soviet Union and China were both a threat. Both quickly got nuclear weapons and told their people how bad the U.S. was. Since they both easily out gunned the U.S. (the Soviet Union with 5 times the military and China with one billion people running around like army ants), The U.S., The Soviet Union and China all tried to gain influence by hook (economic and military aid) or crook (lots of dictatorships were formed because of this) tried to gain as many allies as possible to offset the imbalance. Sometimes like in Vietnam, Korea and Afganistan, one side would go too far and fighting would break out.

Ever wonder why Arab terrorists use Soviet weapons? After all the Soviets killed millions of Muslims since they didn't tollerate any religion (even the Jews and Christians couldn't openly pray or have religious material in the Soviet Union). The U.S. didn't have "God" in the pledge of Allegence until somebody pointed out the pledge sounded like Communist propoganda. Adding the word God in the pledge made the difference to "us" and "them" more clear. It's the same reason why the Arab terrorists hate Israel. The Soviet Union paid these guys to destroy Israel, Europe and the U.S. The Koran makes it clear to treat the Jews and Christians like brothers. The Soviets made it clear that the clerics would be paid well (and be well armed to make their own power plays) if they attacked U.S. allies. It was the Soviets that created the holy war. It's also why the Arab world never unleashed a holy war against China and the Soviet Union (because the U.S. wasn't paying them to do so).

After the break up of the Soviet Union, the U.S. is the own remaining super power. There was talk about using the U.N. more, but they can't even handle the thugs in Haiti. U.N. soldiers just sit around and get paid since the leaders give conflicting orders every 5 minutes. China refuses to send troops to topple the thugs and dictators and sent only one narco cop to Afganistan. Europe has troops in a lot of place besides being in the U.N., but British soldiers are the only ones that seem to be willing to actually do anything constructive. Just look at the French in Lebanon. One car bomb and they will flee like cattle chased by a lion. That basically left the U.S. to clean up the political mess left by the Cold War. Several key dictators have been replaced by democracies, more countries are getting richer and now the thugs are being chased, captured and killed.

Exactly! We look for reasons to go to war just because of this!
In addition, as we have an all-voluntary military, we love to put these young courageous people in harms way, then take bets on how many come home alive, maimed for life, or in a box.
Plus war is good for our economy!
We spend money we don't have just for the fun of trying to defend ourselves after we have been attacked!!
