As the others have said you can reinstall the operating system however that is a rather drastic step to take. Try the disk cleanup and the disk defragmenter tools. Also if you use Internet Explorer open it click on tools scroll to Internet options and erase cookies, on-line content and the page history, this should speed up your Internet explorer program and if you know how to do it emptying your pre-fetch folder once a week is a good idea.
A good way to free up hard drive space is to buy a free space washer/eraser and to run that program after manually deleting all the files you don't need/ can't use. and it is never a bad idea to run a registry cleaning program once a month.
Here are some URLs that will have program's to help fix and maintain your software and or hardware. http://www.v-com.com http://www.webroot.com http://www.cyberscrub.com
I hope this helps you.

You will be told that your PC cannot perform the function until restarted. Type Y for yes. Restart your PC.

There are other functions you can perform to clean your disk.

Reinstall Windows. Seriously, even the best maintained Windows install begins to accrue crap and slow down over the course of a few years and the only way to get your machine back to it's original speed again is to back up your files then reinstall Windows from fresh.

The best option would be to back up any essential documents or files you have, and then completely reinstall windows (and reformat your hard drive in the process). This will wipe everything out and let you start from a clean slate.
