I want to pursue a career in primary teaching and obtain a PGCE in the next couple of years. I work in Central London and wonder how I can gain the necessary experience whilst working full time? Any advice would be great!

Do you work during the day? If you work evenings then you can sign up with a local school and help out that way. Often they may just have you go to the library and then they send kids to you that need help.

What about right after school? Many times schools need help with afterschool programs. You help kids after school and they have somewhere safe to be while waiting for their parents to get home from work.

Could you volunteer to work evenings in a library? Speak with the libraries and see if they have a literacy program. You could even just sign up to read a book to children at certain times. This may not be exactly what you are looking for, but it could still count as experience and help you get your foot in the door.

Do you have a friend or relative that needs help? Work with them and then use them as a reference.

In Leicester (don't know if it is the same woth other areas) there is something called a 'Right To Read' scheme.

Companies like Alliance & Leicester are big into it, and it certainly works well with the staff and the kids love it too!

I go ask the teacher and the principal of our local school and she sends me to the classes that need it the most.

I don't really see how you can if you work full-time.
