Definitely GYPSY. It is a Sondheim show with amazing music that is a fresh and classic today as when it first opened on Broadway. Also, some of the best actresses in history have conquered Mama Rose--from Angela Lansbury to Tyne Daly to most recently Bernadette Peters.

It depends upon what you mean by "Best. " Most popular? Or the one that aspires to be more than entertainment. For me, it's Follies but fun it ain't. A Chorus Line, Cabaret, Porgy and Bess, Oklahoma! , She Loves Me. They're all great. Anyone can say something is The Best Musical Ever but they should always put the word : Arguably in front of it.

I am sure I am the only one who has this opinion, but I have to say...
OOOOOHHHHHHK-Lahoma....Oklahoma is the best! 1955 version is great. Total classic. WONDERFUL music. Wow. I love it.
The usual Phantom of the Opera and the occasional Music Man are some of my favorites.

Rent!
i think this because it is so moving...i love it and when it was a movie i cried and cried. it has real life issues, but it is still really funny. it deals with AIDS in the late 1990's, in the new york city east village, its the best movie and musical i have ever ever seen. and in the movie, the singing is AMAZING! plus, the guy who wrote all the Rent music actually died of AIDS! its the greatest musical ever!
