You need to contact the U.S. Copyright office. Do a search. It's like the first or second thing that pops up. :P

And the guy above me has it somewhat right, and somewhat wrong. You CAN register a copyright with the copyright office to provide additional legal coverage. They will also do research to make sure that your work is the original, but there is no hard and fast payment option as they charge by the hour for the research.

A copyright doesn't cost anything per se. Your created individual works are automatically protected by copyright. Of course, if you are publishing these works without attempting to protect the copyright, it can eventually be lost. Normally though, this protection just comes in the form of litigation and cease and desist letters that you make to infringers. So there is no initial cost, even though technically you should have some costs to maintain a copyright.

The Government gives you copyright protection for free.

If you want to register a copyright, you have to pay. It can cost $30 or more.
