Its Auburn tradition.
Might have something to do with the fact that it's a school in Alabama.
Historically, people from that area of the country aren't terribly smart.

Isn't it great? We have a school tradition that is so vibrant and colorful that it supports not one, but two mascots. Actually, when you consider that we also call ourselves the "Plainsmen" because of the Oliver Goldsmith poem, "Auburn, sweet Auburn, lovliest village on the plains," then you have a program that is rich indeed.
To answer your question, War Eagle is a long standing battle cry, and we see no need to change it. Just enjoy the contradiction of it all, and devote your mental energy to more important things in liife.

War Eagle is the battle cry, while the mascot is the Tigers.
Legend has it that years ago, Auburn was losing a football game. Someone looked up into the sky, saw an Eagle, and called it a War Eagle. The Eagle brought them good luck, and they won the game. Since them, it has been their battle cry.

I plan on wishing everybody a "Merry Christmas" in the coming holiday time, and I don't give a freaking damn if they don't appreciate it! If someone wished me a "Happy Hannukkah" or "Joyous Ramadan" or whatever, I would take it in the spirit of love in which it was offered. Only a shriveled soul would complain about receiving good wishes.
