I have a job working for the State of Utah, so it pays bad and is a high stress job, however, I have the best benefits I've ever heard of, with how much I save on benefits I actually make as much as someone with my position in the private sector. I'm an Executive Secretary and I hate it, I want a job that I will like that makes the same amount of money or more, But then I think about how everyone hates there job and I just need to get use to it or that I'm being a baby. I feel like I dont fit in, everyone is 40 years or older and I'm only 20, I've worked here a year and I still dont feel confindent in this job. It gets really stressful and sometimes I even had to go to my car to cry, this job is giving me a lot of oppertunities, it will even send me to school, I just dont know how much longer I can take it, I feel drained when I get home, which is effecting my relationship with my fiance. Anyways...What should I do. I hate my job but it is a job with security and opportunity.

Well, if you are actually crying and suffering from a lot of stress, I would seriously consider leaving your job. You basically have three options.

1) Keep working but try to transfer and find a new job with the State of Utah. That way you can retain your good benefits and perhaps find a less stressful and more fulfilling job. I would suggest you take a look at your State job board or listings.

2) Keep working and try to find a job in the private sector. The pay is usually higher but the benefits are usually not as generous. You have to weigh the pros and cons of both. If you use your benefits frequently, it might not be a good idea..if not, it is an option..try posting your resume on monster.com, hotjobs.com, and look at craigslist.org to name a few.

3) Quit the job and start looking..if you need income..this would be a bad idea.

I think you should go with option 1) because it give you an opportunity to keep what you want. I don't think you should hate your job..after all you spend 40+ hours a week in your job..which is a significant portion of your life. Life is too short to shorten it even more having a stressful job.

I say if you don't like your job, your not going to function well wit other things. It's not a good thing if your job stresses you out more then twice a week and is now effecting your personal life. I say find something you like to do, it shouldn't always be about the benefits and the connections unless its really worth it in the long run. But I say its not in your cause and you need to be happy doing your job or your not meant for it, don't suffer for the other things if it's effecting you mentally and physically. There is lots of opportunities out there and your still at a young age, try different things, get a better job that helps you stay sane. It's not worth it to end up in stress and yes people hate there jobs and suck it up for the $ but you don't have too. Take the step to a better life and explore new jobs or careers till you find your perfect one, where your not bringing the negative attitude of work home with you. You deserve better.

I quit a career government job after 8 years because of the bull and the stress (and it did pay very well). I decided there was no point in breaking my spirit for a paycheck, I'd rather break the bank.

You're young and have a year under your belt in the work force... find something that inspires you, that makes you want to go to work; even if it means returning to school.
