The events that "inspired" the movie involved a couple by the name of Tom and Eileen Longergan, and it was off the coast of Australia.

Based on a case in Australia where that happened - although there have been some doubts raised about the case.
You can search online and get tons and tons and tons of info on this. I did when the movie came out.

Pretty much the entire story is assumption. If you see film you see them in Hotel (naked) they begin what looks like a sexual encounter but the wife stops it. This "suggest" they are having problems. Now we don't know who they spoke with on boat if anyone. We know they went in water and never came out and that's all we really know! Movie made up most of it to tell a story

It actually happened to a real couple just the way the movie was enacted. I watch a documentary on the Discovery Channel about it. The movie was pretty much true to form.

Plot Summary for
Open Water (2003)
A young thirtysomething couple goes on holiday to the Caribbean. One of the fun activities open to them is scuba diving off a reef several miles out. Due to a faulty head count taken by the dive boat crew, the couple is left behind in the open ocean. They find themselves drifting endlessly for hours on end, facing dehydration, saltwater sickness, jellyfish stings, and the most frightening menace - sharks! Although several boats and ships pass by within the couple's view, none sees them, and they are not discovered missing until the following morning when the dive boat crew discovers their gear on the boat, and their hotel manager discovers they never returned to their room. Frantically a search is mounted by plane, boat and helicopter. But it may be too late for the young couple, adrift in the....Open Water! Based on a true story from the South Pacific.

A couple from Louisianna who went scuba diving in Australia. A divers slate was found floating in the ocean that said "Monday Jan 26; 1998 08am. To anyone [who] can help us: We have been abandoned on A[gin]court Reef by MV Outer Edge 25 Jan 98 3pm. Please help us [come] to rescue us before we die. Help!!!"

they found the shark dead on a beach, when the opened up the shark to see what it's cause of death was they found body parts of the missing people, and a camera. i'm not sure about the camera but that's what i heard, i know for sure the body parts though.

two people went in the ocean (where people don't belong)
and were stranded. who knows how it ended.
