Why are point mutations (where a single nucleotide of a gene is changed) less noticable and less harmful than the chromosomal mutations? Explain in detail please.

i am going to try to explain in plain english. basically gene expression depends on a group of three necleotides, say "ATT". somehow the third necleotide does not always make a difference. so, say "ATT" code for protein 1, "ATG" also codes for protein 1. point mutation that changes ATT to ATG does not do the body harm becuase the body is still getting the protein that it needs.
