A pregnancy test can be done from urine or serum either one. Only if your dr. feels that you need a quantitative test (one that actually gives him numbers) Then he would order a beta-hcg serum test. If you have not missed your period yet, then its no guarantee you are pregnant. If you are the tests are not sensitive enough to detect it until you are at least one-two weeks along. Different test can detect at different levels. I would not be concerned until you are a week late then you might check out doing a home pregnancy test. If you find that is negative and want a more thorough test look into the beta-hcg test. Whatever your outcome good luck to you and yours.

A blood test can detect earlier then a urine test, but I'm not sure how much earlier. Both kinds of tests are more effective after the missed period. I know there is a urine test that can show the results 5 or so days before the period, so a blood test could probably be accurate if taken a week before. At any rate I'd wait a week to see if you get your period, then both tests would be more accurate.

As for the cold medication, your doctor or pharmacist should have told you if the medication you were prescribed had the possibility of affecting your birth control, at the least the paper you received with the medicine should have mentioned this. Of course birth control isn't 100% at the best of times...

Get tested, it sounds like a baby would be a bad thing for you right now what with your schooling and future job, so good luck, I hope your fears are unfounded.

There is a chance that your cold meds may have altered the effectiveness of your birth control pill.
It is however possible that you are just having weird pms cravings. I get that all the time! If you feel that there is a possiblity that you may be prego, then there is a new test out there that can tell you if you are pregnant up to 5 days before you are supposed to start your period. I can't remember which one it is, but go to your local drug store it will say it on the package.
The blood test will test for the same thing that the pee tests do. HGC in your system. It is only there when you are pregnant. If the test is covered by your insurance, then why not just call and make the appointment if there is any question??
Sorry to hear about the bad timing if you are, but congrats at the same time.

If your cold medication was an antibiotic, then you may be pregnant. Some antibiotics interfere with the pill and can render it ineffective. I've certainly never heard of people who weren't pregnant putting pickles and vinegar in their ice cream! :)

However, if you were not on an antibiotic and were taking your contraceptives correctly it is highly unlikely that you have concieved, no matter what you happen to be craving. Some women have strange cravings around period-time due to hormone changes. To answer your question, a blood test can be accurate around 3 days after conception--that does NOT mean 3 days after intercourse! Sperm live for 72 hours or more so conception, if it took place, can take place days after intercourse. Wait at least a week for a blood test to be accurate.

depending on the strength of the estrogen in the pill sometimes the pill will make you crave food and things as though you are pregnant. Wait to see if your period comes if not then get the blood test It takes the pill 3 months to completely get in your system
