If politicians weren't allowed to receive money and gifts from corporations or citizens, would this improve or not improve the operation of our government?

First Amendment issues not withstanding, wouldn't open, unfettered debate on issues, absolutely no negative TV adverstising, and zero concern for the amount of money in a candidate's campaign bank account help create a more transparent system of electing our leaders?

It would be a good start!

With heavy fines & prison time for violators, both donor AND candidate. Put some teeth into the enforcement.

It could not happen. Donations are a Free Speech issue, protected by the First Amendment.
The operation of the government would stay the same. Business as usual.
The candidates for office may be different. If individuals had to spend their own money on campaigns, only the very rich would run for office.
If only the government doled out campaign funds, only the "in crowd" those who know how to get the money would run for office.

I'm not sure, but it would be worth a try. Anything would, to bring a little integrity to our political arena.

Our government is based on freedom of speech and the right to challenge - but, come on! Can't they get their message across without acting like idiots - it's embarrassing.

We might get a lot more done in areas of concern, if more time were spent on finding solutions, instead of finding the dirt on the other guy.

without lobby groups and contributors to election campagains the government would be less corrupt. everyone in government knows that to stay in power they must kiss up to certain organizations. which in turn means they must support that organizations cause at all costs. we see it happen everyday. in certain cases american interests are subverted for the interests of these organizations. some of whom work on behalf forgein companies and contries.
