Political cartoons didn't really come into vague until after 1800. Earliest I have seen are European around the era of Napoleon.

You draw the Articles of Confederation as an ant. And the - whatever, the other thing - is like a giant foot about to step on it. the beauty is, this cartoon appeals to the people who are in favor of that other thing, pllus it also appeals to people who have feet. So you boost circulation with both groups.
