In Conneticut a few years ago everyone in the state seemed infested with these annoying creatures. Turns out the were a result of a more the normal humid summer.
My grandmther taught me the best thing to get rid of them in a house. Place vinegar in a claer cup, bowl or glass and leave on the counter They are attracted to the vinegar and drown.
They especailly difficult to keep out when they result from outside since their size allows them to easily enter through screened windows. We had to keep all teh windows closed for a few days to completly get rid of them that year. Was the only time we ever had them except the odd one or two when bringing fresh overripe produce in from the grocery.

RE:
Why are there so many gnats in my house all of the sudden?
We keep our house fairly clean, but recently, many gnats have appeared, flying around the house. They aren't in bunches like you would find them outside, but alone. Could there be some animal or spoiled food in my house that is causing them to come in?

Have you recently moved an outside plant inside? Or purchased an inside plant from a garden center? The gnats can come from the soil in the house plants.

Do you have any fruit that is out in the open? Like in a bowl on the kitchen table or anything? They could be fruit flies.
This does not mean that the fruit is spoiled, they just somehow find there way to where ever the fruit may be.

Mold.
Check for any signs of mildew or mold in your house or house plants. They love the mold/mildew/soil to lay eggs in

Most likely they have some rotting food to feed on. They feed on plants too but mostly on protein.

Check to make sure your garbage is emptied daily. They are magnets for peelings from fruits and vegetables. They also seem to like ketsup.

Yes! Check for some type of food...especially fruit, that they might be launching from. :)
