In order of importance:
1. So you don't get hurt or killed or injure others in the laboratory.
2. So you don't damage the apparatus, equipment or facility.
3. So you don't get booted out of the laboratory and possibly flunked if you are in an educational institution laboratory or fired if you are in an industry or government laboratory.
