Start by reading at least 2 books and doing lots of research. I've had my iguana for 3.5 years, and she's awesome.
I bought her from PetCo - only because she was the liveliest of the bunch, and because I wanted to rescue her. PetCo is the worst. They use the bark bedding, but they don't treat it beforehand, and there are signs up warning consumers of this. The red bugs are mites, and they can be ditched if you know what you're doing.

First - they need ROOM! If you start with a small iggy, you'll need a MINIMUM of a 32 gallon cage. If you start with a glass cage - get a Lizard Lounge. They are tall and they are well-built. The Lizard Lounge is worth every penny... they can get a bit pricey, but if you look around, you should be able to find something reasonable. If you have a place to put the cage, you can get it without the stand, saving you some money.

An iguana is a long-life creature, and it's NOT an easy-care pet. They can live 15 to 20 years in captivity. While they are beautiful, amazing animals, you must be willing to make a commitment.

They require UV lights - $25-$35 each (but you only need 1/year), heat lamps - $10-12, a hiding spot, big water bowl to defecate in, regular water and food bowl, fresh food and water daily, multivitamins, calcium supplements, brewer's yeast (only if you make the salad in bulk and freeze it).

At the pet store - PetSmart or an exotic animal supply shop is best (PetCo isn't worth the effort) - you can get the lights - 1 UV light, 1 daylight spot, 1 nightlight spot (so he/she can snooze), and the cage.
Go to the hardware store for the UV light fixture and the fixtures for the basking bulbs. If using a small cage, you won't need more than 60-75W for the basking bulbs. UV light should be iguana-specific, not for desert animals.
Go to a health food store - for calcium carbonate tablets or powder, regular adult mulitvitamins (might be cheaper at Walmart), and brewer's yeast (available in powder or tablet).
For the substrate (lining the cage) butcher paper is best, don't use newspaper (because of fumes from the print) unless you're getting an open-air cage. You can also use construction paper, paper towels, etc. Something absorbent.
The cage must be cleaned after the animal craps - usually once/day.
You can furnish with nearly anything that doesn't have a sharp edge. Get driftwood from a beach and bake it in the oven (350 for two hours) to kill the bugs. Let it cool and put it in the cage.
Feel free to email me for more info - including the iguana salad, sites for your reference, etc. I'm easy to talk to and have extensive iggy knowledge.

If you don't like buying from pet stores, you may be disgusted to learn about how breeders overdo it for extra income.

Can you afford to give the lizard what it needs? I mean, you realize it may grow up to 6' in length, and may even hurt you badly with a bite? Why don't you start with a smaller lizard, and re-evaluate when you get the hang of it?
