Apparently he's in the wine business. Does this mean he has any contacts with anyone living in France?

He owns a vineyard, but it's located in Arizona.

It is possible there is a connection. You may remember that he is (was) in the band A Perfect Circle. Their beautiful debut album is named Mer De Noms. A French enthusiast such as yourself will know that the CD's name means "Sea of Names."
