My favorite, Pablo Casals, playing Bach's Chello Suites, lovely stuff. if you want something a little more contempory, try apoliptica, they're a cello quartet who play the music of metallica, really interesting, and very different

The Bach cello suites are indeed a must, but Casals's recordings are older and a bit scratchy. Paul Tortelier's recordings of them are good, but my personal favorite is a disc by Edgar Meyer, who recorded three of them on bass.

The cello concerto by Antonin Dvorak is spectacular, as is the Brahms double concerto for cello and violin. Also of note is a more modern piece by Steve Reich called "Cello Counterpoint."

And of course it goes without saying that Yo-Yo Ma is the unparalleled master of the cello these days. Any recording he made is likely to be of high artistic quality. In addition to his classical repertoire, he has been recording folk music from around the world, such as his "Silk Road Journeys" album, and the "Brazil" album. He has also worked with Edgar Meyer and violinist Mark O'Connor on a series of Appalachian style folk music.

Well it's probably not what you heard but; If you want string instruments of a dark and sombre mood I would highly recommend the 15 string quartets of Dimitri Shostakovich. I know it sounds a lot to get through but believe me they are definitely that good, not one dud amongst them. Discovering these works myself not so long ago was an utter joy. Very dark, bleak, pessimistic(certainly from no.2 onwards and especially the later ones) and beguilingly beautiful with some quite heartbreakingly sad adagios throughout. I'm not really a fan of happy, jolly, carefree stuff the darker the better for me. In my humble opinion these are definitely the finest string quartet cycle after Beethovens. There's a wonderful box set of the first 13 by the original members of the Borodin quartet on the Chandos label.(see link) It's never far from my stereo.

For something different try "Apocolyptika" (not sure if i've spelt that right!). They are a 4-piece cello group who do rock covers - mainly metallica. I know it sounds a bit odd, but I've seen them a couple of times and it's actually really good and would certainly provide a different style of cello music for you to try.

Just to add, Mstislav Rostropovich has also recorded the Bach 'cello suites. Beyond description...

Also try Jacqueline DuPre's rendition of Elgar's 'cello concerto. Rachmaninov's 'cello sonata is also superb.

Enjoy!
