Exact.
There are two types of normal mucus:
1. clear, stretchy, fertile mucus
2. and white or yellow, non-stretchy, non-fertile mucus.
Sperm can survive in stretchy, fertile mucus for five and one half days and in the non-fertile, non-stretchy mucus for only a couple of hours.
The fertile time in a woman's cycle is from the beginning of the wet, slippery, clear stretchy mucus until three-four days.
Cheers,

Cervical fluid or mucus will vary from woman to woman, so you need to be familiar with what your body produces. However, cervical mucus that is produced around the time you ovulate should look and feel like the consistency of egg whites. When you notice this type of cervical mucus it means you are going to ovulate soon. This mucus is also a healty, and fertile pathway for sperm to travel and survive in as well.
The book "Taking Charge of Your Fertitliy" has a color insert in the middle of the book with pictures of "fertile quality" cervical mucus, as well as mucus from other times in the cycle. There is also a sub chapter about this, and it explains it all. http://www.tcoyf.com

Not in order to ovulate, but when she is ovulating you can tell because the mucus is clear and stretchy. That make it a smooth ride for the sperm traveling to the egg. The older you get, the more you will learn about your individual body. Predicting your cycles depending on how you feel, being able to tell when your ovulating, and sometimes being able to tell if your pregnant without a test. You can see that your not ovulating when the mucus is white and thick. Its impenetrable for sperm (sometimes one gets through)

egg white looking mucus is a sign that ovulation is coming. When you are ovulating the mucus will be slippery and your vulva will be swollen. Go to www.woomb.org.

You can ovulate without clear and stretch cervical fluid, but you are more fertile with it because the sperm can swim better in this type of fluid.
