Its a slang type of greeting. Just repeat it bask to them. They say "What's up"...you say "Hey what's up".
Or you can say any similar variation such as "not much" or "just kicking it" or "hanging tight".
Or you can be even cooler and look them in the eye and just point at them.

I have a bad habit of asking that question too...I ususally get the response of nothing, or my blood pressure. I also have the habit of asking what are up to? I have a friend who always responds 6'1" (his height)

My old response was to say "Not much". I said it every day. Then I realized that I sounded so boring. Now I usually think of something quick to add on or say instead. Ex: "Not much, just got back from my vacation" or "Just tryng to finish this paper I'm working on". It sounds like you actually have something going on and is a start to a conversation if they want to have one.

You say nothing much what's up with you. What's up is a greeting that is used instead of say Hey how you doing what is new with you?

Sometimes I say "the sky." Sometimes if I'm in a nasty mood, I may stick a finger up my nose, then look at it and say "nothing." Or, I may say, "what's up...you mean what's up my ***, how should I know, maybe you should take a look."
