Well - I used to be a telemarketer in my high school days and the concept was just being tried out.
My personal objective in order to reach my target was to, first, by any means necessary get the person on the other end of the phone to understand the product (After I understood it myself through research targeted at the intended segment.) and second, get them to ask themselves the pivoting question of
"How will this product/service enhance my lifestyle/business?" without actually intending to make them do that.
The spark of interest has been ignited. What you then answer to the queries put forward will either seal the deal or expose you - if you don't have the necessary product knowledge.

Thats what I do,in fact I am working right now. Our main objective is based on what kind of marketing you are doing.Like some times it is based on the emount of calls you do,and some times it is based on how many appointments or survays or sales you get.It all depends on what kind of work you are doing.
