It's not bad, but cost of cartridges can get high, especially considering the fact that Epson cartridges never completely empty themselves. (See www.epsonsettlement.com).
If you are considering a new printer, I'd recommend either the HP C4180 or the C5180. The C5180 costs around $199, but is a much better printer than the Epson cx5000. It has 6 individual ink cartridges that you can purchase in a value pack for $37 (includes all 6 and has enough ink to do 150 photos).
The other printer, the C4180 is $50 less and takes the normal two cartridges- black and color. Both these printers have a screen for viewing/editing photos without a computer.
HP and Canon are the two best printers on the market according to the readers of PC Magazine.
