My computer has a virus or something because after I log in it just freezes. I can still move the mouse, but there's no taskbar or start menu. To save money I want to use a Windows XP upgrade disc...will that work? I want to erase all the data on my computer and start fresh with just the operating system. Please help!

It's probably doesn't have anything to do with a virus or trojan. In most cases, hardware crashes and strange software behaviour are not caused by an infected PC.
Some people on this site push SPAM for anti-virus programs and other products on purpose too.

Since you can get to the desktop when you start normally, the problem is with a program that is set to run when Windows starts up. If your computer crashes before you get to the desktop after rebooting, then the problem is usually a hardware or software driver.

Before you go re-installing XP, try using System Restore first. You'll have to start XP in Safe mode first though, since you can't start XP normally. Reboot, and press and hold the F8 key, until the XP boot menu appears. (If your computer keeps beeping when you hold down the F8 key, keep tapping the key instead.)
Select Safe Mode from the text menu and wait until the desktop appears. At that time, Windows will ask you if you want to continue on with Safe Mode. Select 'Yes.'
The System Restore program can be accessed by clicking the Start button, and going into the Programs|Accessories|System Tools menu.
You should read the Windows help file about System Restore before using it. (Just click the Start button, select Help & Support, and search for System Restore.) Any changes you make with System Restore can be reversed easily.

No you cant use that to take your computer back to factory. You are going to need the drivers disk or recovery disk. You have to wipe out the whole system before you can put in a windows up date. Trust me I know i just went through this not long ago with my laptop. My drivers disk went bad and I had to see about getting a new disk which I am still waiting on a new one. My computer would freeze up on me and it would not let me do anything. So I recovered it.
