I go through this every year. What I try to do is go see them the weekend before Thanksgiving and Christmas, and that frees me up so that me and my family(me, my kids and husband) can enjoy our own holiday together. This works for me right now during Christmas because I want my kids home for Christmas morning to open their presents!! (Santa etc.)

Tell them that you want to start your own Christmas traditions in your own home. Make plans to have a Christmas party on the 24th, or on the 26th. I used to be in the same boat - we had four kids so now it's too expensive to fly, and 4 kids in the van for 16 hours is not going to happen!

Honey, I don't know ANYONE that wants to be around their inlaws for the holidays...but you have to remember that they are family whether you like it or not....
but you know, you could always say that you have a migraine headache and you need to stay home if you don't find another reason between now and then! good luck!!

Say you're going to be having Christmas at your house this time. You can start a new tradition.

Depends on why you don't want to go
If you like them, invite them to you
If you don't, tell your husband you don't want to go and you would rather have Christmas at home. Then let HIM tell them.

You can just tell the truth. Or you can say you need to help someone.
