www.hp.com is the best place to buy a brand new laptop cheap. Overstock.com has laptops even cheaper, but they are mostly old and have scratches and dings in them.

Recommend Dell. Secondhand is not advised because of the limited lifespan of the batteries and because you may need the modern connections.

Refurbished come with a guarantee. There is a cheap (but not cheap enough) by mail order on the Internet.

I bought mine three years ago in a shop window for £100, but it has not got S-video connections, not powerful enough for XP, and the batteries worked for about an hour and then packed up entirely.

In Ireland it's Tesco - and you get clubcard points too. They might be worth a look in the UK.

Many good answers here, but I always start with http://www.pricewatch.com

This service scans the actual prices of hardware and software listed at many many stores and distributors...

Good luck!
