it keeps crashing when going to play games and sometimes theres no picture and the ring of light flashes red

You have an internal problem, and I'm sorry to tell you, but it might NEED to be repaired if you ever wanna play it again. I just got my 360 back from repair today, they gave me a brand new one.
The reason I got mine replaced was because there was no picture and there were 3 red lights on ring of light...this means there is an internal problem and HAS to be repaired or replaced.
Call 1-800-469-9269, its the Xbox 360 customer support. Don't be afraid of calling them, I am 13 and called them...they are very friendly and helpful.
When calling them, have a pencil and paper ready...also have your serial number on the back of your 360, and have all the information about where you live.
3 red lights means internal problem, and I am afraid you have no choice but have it repaired, or buy a new one...
Sorry, and call as soon as possible, if you want your 360 fixed quicker.

Well, it sounds like any other Microsoft product.
(And no, I am not a Mac lover or Linux person. In fact, I use Windows exclusively and run a small business fixing windows machines!!!)
