When a game is in extra innings or in the bottom of the 9th, and the home team is either tied or behind. Someone hits a home run that either breaks a tie, putting their team into the lead and thus ending the game. Or, if a team is down by lets say 1 run, and somebody hits a 2 run shot, then the game would be over if its hit in the bottom of the 9th or the bottom of any extra inning.

A "Walk Off" home run is a home run that ends a game. Only a home team can hit one. The term was made because the opposing team is walking off the field when the home run is hit.
