The Puritan sermons were called "jeremiads" (after the name of the biblical prophet Jeremiah, though the sermons also used other texts).

These sermons were given in various parts of New England, but esp. associated with the Massachusetts Bay Colony where they began.

The first great example which 'set the standard' was Samuel Danforth's 1671 sermon "A Brief Recognition of New Englands [sic] Errand into the Wilderness" .
