One problem is what would you make the tube out of? The weight of miles of tube would always cause the bottom to collapse, no matter how thick you tried to make it..

It's why we can't build a space elevator yet. There is nothing strong enough to use to make the cable.

It wouldn't work anyway. The entire atmosphere is like a really wide tube. The tube would work just like the atmosphere, filling with air if you opened it at the bottom. The air in the tube would rise no higher than the air around the tube. It would be like trying to pump water out of a bucket by just dipping a tube into it. That example is not to be confused with siphoning, where the far end of the tube is lowered to a place below the bucket, but outside the bucket. There is no place lower than the Earth in space to put the other end of your tube. And even if there was, I don't think siphoning works with gasses, only liquids.

Sounds like a variation of the space elevator.

Wouldn't work, of course. You can't shove stuff out into near orbit and expect it to stay there. It's gonna come back down. You'd have to shove the stuff out beyond L5 to get it to go away.

For those who don't know what the L5 is, that's where the power of Earth gravity is balanced by the sun's gravity. A little complicated because of the moon in the equation, but the best place to put a space station since no power would be needed to keep it there.

Never heard of that.
But I did hear about building a ring around the Earth just outside of the gravitational pull of the Earth, with elevators going to the ring in space.

Wouldn't the tube burn up in the atmosphere just like meteors? That doesn't seem like it would work!

That's stupid. The physics on this idea is probably impossible.

Some hippy liberal must of thought that up while smoking weed and getting it in the butt by his homogay life partner.

with the intention to negate earth's gravity so close to earth, you actual could gain ORBIT, meaning your speed is intense adequate to reason orbit. The acceleration required to accomplish that speed isn't available, because you may could have too huge a go area on your "tower"; it may crumple below its very own weight. as far because of the fact the orbiting satellite tv for pc and the elevator - i detect it difficult to have self belief that it is heavily being "researched". you have all the comparable issues. Plus, regardless of in case you may rocket the tip of the rope to "seize up" to the satellite tv for pc, the ability required to place a payload up the ladder may be the comparable as in case you "released" it, lower back because of the speed required to realize orbit. those adult adult males might desire to return to physics "one hundred and one" and function a refresher on the financial ruin titled "escape speed".

That seems really pointless and impossible.
