Usually if the item is still in good shape it can be re-sold or at a discount, if not, it is written off and removed from inventory. The retailer does lose some money but can write off the item as a loss. This does make prices go up and most retailers sell their merchandise at a markup to cover for these losses, so the customers are paying for it.

Well it all depends on whether or not the merchandise is damaged. Most places won't give you your money back unless the item is broken. If it's broken, it's shipped back to the original manufacturer. If it like th wrong size or something like that, it's usually just restocked.

it depends on what it is and what shape it's in. clothes have to have the tags on them and be clean, if they are returned they get put back on the shelf. any kind of make up, medicine, shampoo, toothpaste, anything like that usually gets reurned to the maker.
there are certain things, such as food products that get thrown away and written off. The FDA will not allow them to put those kinds of products back out on the shelf.

Some retailers such as Sears use eBay to dispose of returned merchandise. http://stores.ebay.com/Sears-Liquidation-Center/Shop-Sears.html

Sometimes it goes to the CLEARANCE rack.
