i mean, why do some really bad shows last like 10 seasons and some really good shows get canceled after a few seasons?

I think it has to appeal to the masses. A drama has to keep you wanting to watch it next week. A good comedy has to make me laugh out loud. There was a show on a while ago called Titus, I loved it, but it was only on for like 2 seasons so obviously not a lot of people watched it.
I loved Friends, That 70's Show, Seinfeld...they were all hilarious.
I love Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, ER.
I am not so much into the reality shows, there are too many.

GREAT QUESTION!!! NBC had a show called Mr. Sterling about a replacement Senator for the state of California that was well written, performed and hit some important topics, but it only lasted like half a season. I am afraid the new show "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" which I saw the other night was great. Well written, good camera work, solid performances, and great set up. It will be so well done that the audiences won't get it and then won't watch it.

It all depends on the viewing public and what we are all into at the time. Most producers try to make shows for those that are in the 16-35 year age range. They are the largest viewers.

You are obviously from America and have'nt seen Coronation St!
I live in England and I am 27 years old. You may find this irrelevant but, Coronation St has been going longer than I have! about 30 years now. It is a national institution!!
It has drama, murder, mystery, love, hate you name it and it's there.
You have to see it to know why it's so good and has lasted so long. You don't know what you're missing!!!!

writing, acting and publicity. I was not a fan of friends, but you would think that if I did not become a fan of friends I would burn in hell. watch the hype for this season and then see if the show is on next year...

I think it should have something that'll catch a person who watches TV and what probably happens in people's everyday life.

it can be good acting, good writers, but if sponsors step away from the show, and viewers are not watching the show goes away.. does not seem fair........
