The object looks like a mushroom stalk, but has no cap. It is about 6 inches long and 1-2 inches wide. It is hollow, with a hole in the top, and is growing vertically. It is white and has a blackish "sweater" around the top.

Does it have an offensive odor? Sounds almost like a "Stinkhorn" mushroom or a "Dog Stinkhorn" mushroom. Try googling those and see if it looks similar.

Depends on where you live. It sounds to me that it might be a type of fungi that an animal has eaten the cap off of. OR it could be some sort of weed. Is the stalk hard or spongy? Hard means it could be a lilly of some kind whose bloom has withered. Spongy would point to a fungi. If you live in the Northern half of the USA look up False Morels. It could be one of those

To get rid of it--if you have kids they like to kick them off. If not, kick it yourself, it will break off easily and should not resprout.
