what is the difference between antivirus and fire wall regarding security?

i have recently purchased a pc with windows XP.I keep getting a pop up from a rival product that says my Norton security is not effective enough, that I should download their product at a cost. Confussed !!!!!

First of all, why are you getting a popup? You have adware/virus on your computer.
