Speaking from experience, having a brother who is homeless whenever he feels like it. You shouldn't give money to people begging in the streets.

Here's the thing there are 3 types of people who are homeless.

1. Legitimate, just hit hard times and need a chance people.

2. Mentally ill.

3. Drug addicts.

1. These people are usually only homeless for a few months at most. There are all ready hundreds of programs set up for homeless people to help them get a place to stay and food. If the person is legitimately trying to get back on their feet they can find these programs no problem on their own. They are also not likely to be the kind of homeless person you see on the street. These people tend to keep it a secret and not beg.

2. There are mentally ill people who go off their medication and go live on the streets because they choose to. These people have no problems getting food. They know where the churches or soup kitchens on they can go to for a free meal. If you give them cash, it will probably be spent either on junk food or alchahol.

3. Many of the people you see on the streets are their because they have lost everything to drugs, and your spare change is not going to help them out. Any money you give them goes directly to drugs or alcahol.

Its better to donate to one of the homes that helps temporarily homeless people become stable again.

It's not so much that people don't want to help. But nowadays, you can't trust anyone. A person soliciting for money on the street could be a gang member or thug or rapist. No one wants to be a target, even though a genuinely needy person may be ignored in the process. If you really want to help the homeless and destitute, send a donation to the Salvation Army, or one of the homeless shelters. At least that's safer than handing out money on the street.

Some people feel that there are better ways to help those in need. I don't give people money on the street because I don't think it's going to change their situation. I will give money to organizations that help people get off drugs, or find jobs, or other programs like that.

The truth is there are too many scammers on the streets. How can you tell the difference between someone who really needs help and someone who would just rather beg for money than try to help themselves?

People choose to give charity in many ways. Those people who pass on the street are often making other charitable donations in places like churches or local charities. The decision is how is your money going to best be used. Often, the person asking on the street will not be putting your money to as good of use as say, a soup kitchen or homeless shelter.

Good for you! You will receive so many blessings helping people that need it. And they're not all crackheads and drunks. Most of the people out on the streets need direction and social services, but a dollar here and there could possibly prevent them from starving until they do get on their feet. If you feel they will misuse the money, drop them off a sandwich, and give them a nice smile.

You can't solve every individual's problem. Many people on the street have mental and/or substance abuse problems - which clouds the purpose for their begging for money. I believe that my financial resources are put to better use supporting organized charities which I know reliably provide social services.

Yea...lets give them all the money we have on our person while we are walking by, so that they can go and buy some drugs or alcohol.

As if they never had money at one point in time. Why should I help some fool that squandered all his money on drugs or gambling. Sounds like its his problem not mine.

I think we could help them by loading them in a dump truck and taking them to Mexico. Might counter balance all the trash that sneaks across the boarder daily.

I agree with you. I try and help everyone that is in need when I see them on the side of the road or on the sidewalk. I've done everything from giving someone my last pennies, to helping people change their flat tires. I know what it is like to be stuck with no one to help. Everyone is worth a helping hand.
