I have family in Atlanta GA, and New Orleans, LA. But im thinking of going to college in Gainesville, Florida. Do you think this would be hard to do, since i have never been there? I could do reseach and learn about the place though.

It is only as hard as you want it to be. Generally, if you have a good outlook to life and like to mingle and make friends, you won't miss home much. If, on the other hand, if you stay secluded and keep to yourself, you will be lonely and miss home a lot.

Gainesville is not too far from Atlanta or New Orleans so you can always visit for holidays.

Of course, doing research on a place is very good idea too because you will get to learn what there is to do and so on so you can keep youself busy.

It is about 4 years that you'll be gone, so I think that's a tough one to do. What I did was to go to college somewhere I could drive home in less that 5-8 hours in cases of emergency or what not. This will give you the liberty you want and at the same time the closeness you seek.

Not a problem. I moved from Baltimore, MD to Allentown, PA some years ago and I do not have any family in PA. It was the best decision I have ever made as it made me more independent in my endeavors and it also made me appreciate home a lot more. I think it would be more challenging for your parents unless you feel like you would get homesick, in which case you might want to have a backup school just in case. Either way, I say go for it! Colleges are more than prepared for this transition.

And now I live in the same town I used to go to school in and I still love it!

It can be lonely at times, but I think you'll be so busy with class and meeting new people that the time will fly. Sometimes it can be very liberating to get away from your family for a while.

Best of luck!

It depends on your family.

Lots of people thrive when they go away from family. Some don't.

The good news for you is that Florida isn't all that far away from Atlanta -- so you can visit them occasionally if you find that you miss family.

The main industry in Gainsville is the university, so there are many other people in the same situation. Enjoy!
