I've read all the books 3 times, starting in 1972 - the last more than 10 years ago. I remembered Frodo and Sam being saved one time by little people living in the mud near mordor.

Just as Sauron corrupted Elves and Dwarves into Orcs and Goblins he had one time in the ancient past tried to corrupt hobbits. He was unsuccessful and so discarded them back into the mud where they remained out of sight, transformed but not evil.

Help! I believe I may be one diet coke short of a 12 pack!

Does anyone else remember anything like this?

Hmmm. I wonder if you haven't read Stephen Donaldson's Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. There are mud people underground who save Covenant to purify themselves or some such thing, and they live right near Lord Foul's Creche.

I have read all three of the books and don't remember any mud people. I know in the first book all four of the hobbits were helped by Tom Bombadillo, but I don't remember them getting any help from mud people from Mordor.

Are you thinking of the Wild Men from the Return of the King that assisted the Riders of Rohan?

I also do not remember these creatures you speak of. They were not saved by anyone in Mordor until the ring is destroyed, after that they were rescued by the Great Eagles.

I think you're thinking of the Wild Men, I don't think they were little though. Maybe they were in the Samrillion (sp?)

I don't remember what you're describing either! Maybe you should read it again? Maybe you took something to mean that when it meant something else?
