Coolant low? Check it after it is cool. DO NOT TAKE RADIATOR CAP OFF WHEN HOT! It will spray hot coolant all over you and burn you. If it is low on fluid, causes can be a leaking radiator hose or a bad radiator with a pin hole in it.

Water Pump? Do you hear a metallic tinging noise? Is it dripping fluid?

Thermostat stuck closed? If it is, it will keep your engine from cooling properly. It is a little spring that has a valve and shuts coolant off of engine.

It is probably one of these things.

Good luck

Gina I also have a heating problem in my 98 civic. Apparentley my radiator was cracked so I had that replace along with the thermostat. However it still seems that the car is overheating when in park are facing down hill. My next problem would be a warpped head gasket which will run damn near 1000.00 to fix. So you should check the raditor you really need to take the car to a mechanic. My civic hardley overheated and now I'm looking at a head gasket job. Victor you are saying that the metallic noise indicates a bad water pump. I've haerd that sound in my civic and wondered what it was it mainly happens when I hit the gas on the freeway.

With the car runninng open the hood and see if "before it starts overheating" the fan is on. A relay makes the fan come on when the temp is at normal operating temperature.. If the fan comes on then it is one of 2 problems....The thermostat is bad or you have a blockage in the cooling system. If the fan doesn't come on...Then it is either the fan relay or the fan itself. The fan can be tested with 2 jumper wires. Unplug the fan. Attach a wire to the positive terminal on your battery. put the wire in one of the terminals of the fan plug. Then connect another wire to a ground. Touch the other terminal of the fan plug. If it starts to work it's the fan relay. If it doesn't it's the fan.

I think what you are SAYING, but I am not sure, is that the temperature gauge reads higher, under these conditions. Thats not the same as what you WROTE. You have a minor electrical problem, which needs a Honda diagnosis. (They plug in a computer and locate the glitch!

Blackbutt also has a point but all the other answers you got so far are totally off the wall. (I was a car mechanic for 40 years)

Wait are you specific it extremely is a Honda. human beings look to think of it extremely is impossible for a honda to interrupt something ever. heavily, your fan isn't coming near so examine the thermostat, fan motor, fan switches, and so on.

Start by checking the fluid in you radiator, then inspect you hoses and clamps, but it sounds like your thermostat is not opening properly. Also check to see if your fans are rotating.

maybe the fan isn't working right...the reason this happens is that when it is in a complete stop, theres no air to go throught the radiator to cool it down...and when you start moving the air hit your radiator...do the faster you drive the more your radiator dissipates heat

this happened to me before and the motor in the fan had quit working not a expensive part. or the radiator could have a hole in it some place, maybe the radiator. which you can pour some silver seal in and that should fix it.

the fan may not be working, lift the hood when the engine is hot if the radiator fan isn't spinning you have found your problem.

sounds like the thermostat, which would be a simple, low cost repair. Take it in right away though, you can burn up your engine.
