The nr. zero was invented independently in India and
by the Maya. In India a decimal system was used, like
ours, but they used an empty space for zero up to 3rd
Century BC. This was confusing for an empty space was
also used to separate numbers, and so they invented
the dot for a zero. The first evidence for the use of
the symbol that we now know as zero stems from the 7th
century AD. The Maya invented the number zero for
their calendars in the 3rd century AD.
The number zero reached European civilisation through
the Arabs after 800 AD. The Greek and Roman did not
need the number zero for they did their calculations
on an abacus. The name 'zero' comes from the arabic
'sifr'.

According to Georges Ifra, the origin of the zero can be attributed to the ancient Indian civilization, and was adopted by subsequent civilizations in conjunction with the 9 integers. In the numerals used with the Arabic alphabet, the zero is signified by a dot: Û°, rather than the empty circle 0.

Zero has its roots in Hinduism and emptiness or nothingness is a Hindu philosophy. Unfortunately the printing press was not invented and most of the concepts and thinking could not be preserved in its original form.

The first civilization to have the concept of zero was in India. The Greeks didn't really have a zero because they thought "how can nothing be something?"

If you mean the number zero, I think the Mayans were the first to come up with it. Not too sure though.
