A year old...I would go with a riding toy. One that he can ride inside too.
The Dinosaur is cool, but I think he would out grow it in just a few month. After a year old they change quick. Little Tikes have some good riding toys for that age and also the big wheels but the small big wheel. Every year old party I go to be it male or female I get them the little big wheel. It goes over good. Plus they are just 20 bucks and you can get two toys.

Books are especially good for that age. There are a lot of good board books that the child will learn from and enjoy but that he can't tear up. My kids really enjoyed Sandra Boynton's books and Mr. Brown Can Moo Can You? by Dr. Seuss. Another favorite is Margaret Wise Brown's Good Night Moon. Pat the Bunny is a good choice too.

Do you have a baby book that you started when your child was born. If not, that would be a good thing to start. I found mine not long ago when I was born 65 years ago. It had visitors names, my first baloon, hair from my first haircut, photo's, illness's, and relatives that visited also. It was neat seeing my 9 month old hair from the barber. Wish I had been smart enough to have done all things with my 3 as my dad did with me.

At that age, you need alot of colors and shapes to keep them busy, the Mega Blocks Pirate Ship is a good idea.

I bought mine at Toys R Us for $32.99

Even though it says 2 years, the child can grow into the toy.

Go to amazon.com. You can look at age appropriate toys. Leapfrog makes some really nice ones. I've been buying my nephew those toys for years and he loves them.

Whatever you choose, i hope it's not one of these:

I saw video of one of these in operation, today.

I believe it should be called "Traumatize Me Elmo"! The damned thing is just *disturbing*!

How about a set of colourful wooden blocks? Too big to swallow, so probably pretty safe, and a very tactile kind of plaything for a 1-year-old.

Duplo blocks (the big legos). Those are great for any kid. They come in their own box/container so they're easy to carry around and store away.

Here is a lot of stuff, you can't go wrong with blocks, balls and toy trucks.

I love that dinosaur, that is too cute.
