If I brought a bright orange plastic squirt gun in to my class in grade school the teacher would take it away for the rest of the year. What the hell is going on in our school systems today? Am I the only one that thinks "zero tolerance" goes way to far way to often? I am interested in knowing why their were no alternative disciplinary action taken.

Its funny I asked the same question in the education slash teaching part of yahoo answers and got a lot of different responses. Perhaps teachers and school administrators have to much power. In the report that I seen on CNN the school stated squirt gun is a simulated weapon and a class IV, which is the most serious school offense. I wish you all could see the gun it had no trigger you had to squeeze it in order for it to squirt. I cant imagine it squirted any more then 4 feet.

You are so very right! I have zero tolerance for these insane "zero tolerance" policies! They're completely stupid and I wonder where everyone's common sense has gone. Wherever it is, it needs to come back.

I also have a six year old son and I can see where you're coming from. Unfortunatly this isn't the same world as it used to be when we were in school. I never heard of anyone shooting at kids in school when I was going. I live in Jonesboro, Arkansas where 2 young boys opened fire on an elementary playground full of kids, killing several of them and a young teacher. I hate the fact that I won't allow my son to even shoot a bebee gun, but I want to teach him that guns are not toys!

Yes, zero tolerance has gone way too far. Suspending a 6 year old for bringing a toy gun to school is utterly ridiculous. It's NUTS!

That is stupid but I guess they cant say no black toy guns but orange is allowed. I dont see why they would suspend him tho. It should go more on a case by case level.
That's why I check my sons backpack every morning and so should every parent. Maybe there wouldnt be knives and other weapons ending up in schools or at least as many.

Yes completely a six year old does not know this is a bad thing. Some talking and discussions would go a long way once in a while.

Yeah I agree with you. But remember they do this because they no longer have government or parent approval to spank misbehaving children like when I grew up. Each class teacher had their own paddle which hung on the wall to let kids know what might happen if they were nasty.

Hell yeah it's asinine. It was a six-year old kid with a squirt gun, it's not like he was gonna hurt anyone with it.

Yeah, a good sit down discussion would have been just as effective. No need for a full day of suspension.
