I know certain local elections like city council you don't need to claim, but how far can you get before claiming a party can hinder you?

I mean at what level do the party you are in (even if you go independent) shows up on the ballot. I know people would vote for or against a person just because of their party even if they are indepenent because people are afraid of them.

The level varies by state and locale. Here in Washington I think it's illegal to run affiliated with a political party. Some cities allow political affiliations for mayor, some don't. Most county level up I think the positions are affiliated.

You don't have to calim a party to run for public office. If you want to run as a candidate from a specific party, you need to be a memeber of that party (obvious) and attempt to become that party's nominee. That's tough to do as most parties hand pick their candidates and whoever runs in a primary that is not handpicked is seen as disloyal.

Outside of the party system, all you need to do to get your name on the ballot is to get enough signatures on nominating petitions. The number required varies depending on what office you're seeking. Local offices require very few signatures to get you on the ballot, while statewide races require considerably more.

WARNING! If you decide to run outside the party lines, the major parties will challenge your petitions in an attempt to have your name removed from the ballot. That's why there's usually a lot of rules in submitting petitions to the governing election board.

If you wish to run as a party candidate you need to ingratiate yourself with the local party chieftans. Bring a lot of money. Donate to other candidates within the party. Show up at as many party functions as possible. Make friends within the party bring money and people with you. If they know you have money and supporters, they will listen to you.
