When you step on the brake pedal, do your brake lights come on? Check this first.
If your brake lights DO NOT come on, it's the brake light switch located up the brake pedal.
The transmission won't shift out of park unless you are stepping on your brake. This is a safety system built into many vehicles.
The system knows you're stepping on your brake through the brake light switch. So if the brake light switch is broken and indicating you're not stepping on the brake pedal it won't let you shift out of gear. Easiest way to determine if the brake light switch is working is to see if your brake lights turn on when you step on the brakes.
If it's not working you need to get a new brake light switch.

Its called a shift inter-lock - prevents someone from putting the car in drive by accedent.
Check fuses 1st off. the inter-lock on that vehicle uses different methods of knowing if the brake pedal is pressed. Also check the brake switch - if that is bad it will prevent it from shifting.
NOT telling you this information in this paragraph but there is a override ( dont tell anyone hehe ) , there is a location on the shifter area that has a little plastic cover - this is used by TOWING companies to move vehicles that they dont have keys too, remove the cover and insert a small screwdriver till its pushed all the way down then move the shifter-some just have a small little access hole.
But fix it correctly dont short cut it - its for your safety.
p.s. check if the brake lights are working also - some cars like JAGS - use them in-line to the brake switch so make sure the system is working properly - its where way of making sure you are giving notice to people behind ya you are braking but allows the shifter to be used only if the system is working properly.
Good Luck

There is an electronic solenoid that will release the shift lever when you press on the brake pedal (commonly referred to as the brake-shift interlock)
The clicking that you heard before was the solenoid working, if it has stopped working, you may be able to manually release the shifter by just turning your ignition key past the "lock" position, but not to the "run" position. Try this and place your car in "Neutral", then you will be able to start the engine.
Eventually you will need to replace the failed solenoid.

on your car their should be a shift override right by the shifter it eigther will be a button you push down or it will be a coin slot looking hole where you can stick your key in or maybe a square cap thats not easily visible that you pop off with a flat head screwdriver eigther way you press it should shift out at that point you can start your vehicle in the neutral position

alright you need to take apart the shifter cover and manually over ride the shift interlock. htere should be a piece you push odwn to unlock it and at this time i dont remember the color. either way you need to get a shift lock solenoid. if you are not that good with fixing cars i suggest you go to a nissan dealer

You might also want to check where you insert your key (I don't remain how it's called). Since you won't be able to remove park on a car with no keys this could be related
