A polar bear club and if so describe the thrill of the swim!

I have heard of it but would never do it! Around here (in the mid-west) they do a thing called the polar plunge. It is for charity and you collect pledges and they cut a hole in the ice on the lake and you jump in. Some people do it alone but most do it with a group. A friend of mine did it two years ago. it was soooo funny. He did it alone in a speed-o. It's crazy but it's for a good cause.

Don't belong to one but have a story to share that might be helpful.
After we all grew up and moved away my parents bought a hot tub. (Smart parents huh...we might not have moved out if they had such a sweet set up when we were living there! LOL)
One day...as my dad told me later...Dad decides he is going to try something similar to the polar bear dip. He has seen people get out of hot tubs and roll in the snow and get back in the tub. So he decides to do this.
(This part is always a bit difficult for me...having to contemplate my naked father rolling in the snow in the courtyard of the herb garden off my mother's kitchen....)
So he does. Later he tells me about it describing the pain of the warm water hitting his skin to that of needles being shoved through every part of your body.
So...I have decided that I will learn from my fathers mistakes. He is a smart guy and raised a smart daughter. I'm not going to try anything weird and probably uncomfortable like that.
You do what you like...but I'll just watch with a warm mug of coa-coa in my mittened hand.

i don't belong to a club but i did the polar bear dunk one time...it's really really cold and your body feels like it's going to shut down afterwards...at least that's how i felt...i didn't like it, but some people do it repeatedly and enjoy it very much...weirdos!!!
