there is a plug gapper sold at auto part stores that will let you make a smaller gap or acdelco distribiter out let

Do you have one of those gap measuring tools? If you don't have one, they are really cheap to buy. It sort of looks like a coin- it's that small. You can get it for like .99 cents at any auto parts store. To be precise in the measurement, you can use the gapper tool. I don't know how you would physically close the gap- I guess just be careful, and gently close the gap using a pair of pliers, or lightly tap the gap with a hammer- but be careful not to damage the plug.

bend it down and then gap it with the gapper to .040 don't hit it with a hammer just put the electrode against a firm surface and push down a little.

I just tap it on something flat and hard, then measure it again. There is a tool that has sort of a two pronged fork that you can buy. It also has the measuring device on it.

tap it very gently on any hard, clean surface until it is correct. Maybe the side of the engine but NOT the painted bodywork!
