My husband just built me a backyard pond with a fountain. Is it hard to keep fish in it? What do I have to do to take care of them?

You should contact your local fish store for specifics. Depending on the depth of the pond, your local climate & how much sun the pond gets will determine what kinds of fish you can have. Goldfish & koi are really hardy. If the pond is more than 3ft deep, you can leave the fish out year round, even in snow- they'll just hibernate. You'll have to feed the fish, make sure the pond water stays to their liking by testing the water, cleaning & maintaining a filter. A fountain is nice, but you'll need something to filter out the dirt & poop in the water from the fish. You may also want to consider pond plants so your fish can hide under them. And the plants would need care also.... Call or go by your local fish store & talk with them, get a book about ponds & do some research before you buy.

Make sure that all the breeds of fish that you have get along with each other. Don't disturb them too much. If you live in a cold climate, make sure that the pond is deep enought that it won't freeze all the way (or install a heater). Also add a bubbler or a fountain for extra oxygen. Clean the pond once a year, but try not to handle or move the fish too much.

Feed them and keep the water clean. If you live in colder climate you have to keep the water from freezing in the winter. You can accomplish this with a pond heater, available at most good lawn & garden centers.

Also keep predators at bay. If you notice cats, birds that eat fish, etc. figure out something to protect them. Pond netting usually works. Good luck

I, too agree with all the answers. One other thing you could do would be to buy a scum eating fish such as a placostomus.
