There are two ways. The first is by creating a tourist venue for people to visit and have a good time. People flock to the Morro, the beach and marina, and even the archaeological park. While this is important, St. Augustine is not the #1 tourist attraction in the states, let alone Florida. So this is important economically for people in this part of Florida.

The more important way is that St. Augustine is held up as the "First American" city. Through reenactments, tourism, national parks, museums, etc, this area creates a feeling of nationalism that American visitors can share - such as Colonial Williamsburg or Gettysburg. In addition, the area is held up as a historical example of a community that has a history comprised of many different ethnic backgrounds - from the slave community in Ft. Mose, the English, the Spanish, to the Native Americans, and the Greeks of New Smyrna.
