Before the invention of the printing press, monks used to sit in their cells, handwriting copies of older books. Very few copies were made and were only available to the elite. After the press was invented, the written word, bibles in particular became household items which required that many more people learn to read. The more people who could read, the more books that were required. With the increased knowledge from those books, more inventions were made with ideas being spread around by way of the printed word. Political handouts together with newspapers became common and the ordinary man slowly began to learn to read. Women then became more prominent and entered into the 'men's world'. Slowly but surely, the written word opened doors that had been previously locked to the common man/woman. As someone asked yesterday, is the pen mightier than the sword. My answer to that was yes, and is the printing press mightier than the pen. Certainly............
Incidentally, Capital letters are called Upper Case and non capitals are called Lower Case. When the printer was setting up his type, the capitals were in a case on the upper level whilst the others were on the lower case...............not many people know that...............

Fatsre production of books and newspapers people learned to read because they had to if they wanted to be in soceity.
The News paper was important when it first came out now they are mostly rags. The internet has replaced news media much like the printing press before it.
This is an example of information transfer that was IMPOSSIBLE just a few monthes ago, the Internet is the new printing press. Anyone can go on my tube or yahoo 360 or other and try to become famous. The old guarded ways to success are being made obsolete like Singers that was a heavyly fortified industry to get into but now anyoone can.

Most likely the most important invention ever made. Edison more than likely got many of his ideas from very large library he had. This must hold true for all greatest inventors directly or indirectly. Ben Franklin used printing press to finance and sell his inventions.

More to the point - what was the result of the invention of movable type? This made the printing press far more influential.

Prior to the inventtion of the printing press, books had to be written by hand. This was time consuming and expensive and books were only available to the very wealthy or to academics usually artistocrats or theologians etc.
The printing press allowed texts to be printed quickly and easily. Books could be produced more quickly and cheapy and were thus more widely available to more people.

One of the major results was that people who could read had access to the bible—once it was translated into common language—for the first time and did not have to rely on clerics to interpret it to them. This may have taken away some of the power of the church over people's lives.
