Leaves need chlorophyll to stay green and chlorophyll needs sunshine for production. As the days get shorter in the fall, the leaves produce less chlorophyll. When the chlorophyll level declines, the carotenoids show up better. Carotenoids are the yellow, orange, and red pigments that make autumn leaves.

Shorter days. There is not enough light to keep the chlorophyll going so the dying off process starts the "fall" season of the leaves.
