The Greeks had a system very like the Romans (in fact, the Romans may have swiped it from the Greeks) that used symbols for numbers. If you enter 'ancient greek numerals' into the search engine, it will show you a picture of them.
Just because Romans hailed things as revolutionary doesn't mean they invented them. They may have simply 'borrowed' from another source (as they borrowed from the Egyptians) and it was only new to the local populance, which was a very uncritical audience.

Be aware; all great civilizations are " borrowers " of what works well. The Roman numerals were a improvement, however slight, on the Greek system. Remember who out stripped who.

I was in Malia last year. The Greeks used normal numbers like us.
