It's actually a cultural thing... in the US, the left ring finger is traditional. This tradition in based on the (incorrect) theory that there was a vein that went from this finger to the heart. However, in some countries such as Greece, India and Chile it's traditional to wear it on the right hand. This stems in part from the traditional negative connotation the left side has.

In the US the engagement ring is worn on your left hand, in Europe and other parts of the world they were it on their right hand.
In the US once you get married the engagement ring and marriage band move to your right hand
