You know that wierd kid who always follows you and your friends around at school? Be nice to them. If you don't they may very well play an instrumental part in your demise.
But seriously, one is about showing compassion even in the hardest circumstances. I.e.: Harry letting Wormtail live and not letting Sirius and Remus kill him either.
Your actions of the past will effect the outcomes of the future. Pretty bloody obvious but anyway.
Also not killing Wormtail showed that Harry understood a fundemental truth, two wrongs do not make a right, killing Wormtail would not bring his parents back it would only bring Harry down to the level of those he hated, Voldermort and now Wormtail.
Letting Wormtail live has set Harry up a little, Wormtail in indebted to Harry with his very life, a debt yet to be repaid.
Book 7 anyone????
Not to blindly believe everything put infront of you to digest. In the begginning everyone, including Harry and Dumbledore though Sirius was an evil killer and betrayed Lily and James to their deaths and poor innocent Wormtail killed by him also.
At the end we find out that Wormtail was the mastermind behind an (as always) elaborate plan to kill Harry and parents and frame Sirius for it and them some.
Are you seeing a pattern here?
Wormtail.
He is the man who SHOULD be The Prisoner Of Azkaban.
HP and the POA insinuates HP and his interaction with a bad guy. but the twist is the 'bad guy' is the worst kind of all, he does not have the 'bad buy' title and everyone thinks he is dead (ala Lord Voldy) he has put the blame on an innocent guy and he is locked away physically and meterphorically, even if he were to escape and tell the truth no one would believe him, yadda yadda yadda. his plan is set.
But HP is here to ruin it all. Good on ya Harry.
So they are just a few ideas.
Hope it helps.

One of JKR's continuing themes is how we handle the choice between doing the right thing and the easy thing. Wormtail chose the cowardly/easy way and betrayed James and Lily. Fudge always takes the easy way -- and he pays for it in later books.
There is also the the theme of Harry's mother's love that continues in this book. Lily's love protected Harry against Voldy's curse. It continues to protetct Harry by bringing him protectors. In POA, Sirius's love for James and Lily makes him become a fierce protector or Harry. In COS, Lupin becomes a protector for the same reason. And this is all part of the major theme of the power of Love. It is a power Voldy didn't get and continues to be unable to comprehend. Love conquers all.
At least that's my take on her works ....

One thing that stands out in my mind is that not everything is as it seems. The wizarding world thought that Sirius was a mass murderer but he wasn't. Everyone thought that Sirius was James and Lily's secret keeper but he wasn't. Everyone thought Peter Pettigew was dead but he wasn't. Everyone thought Peter was a useless, lump of a boy but he wasn't. He was actually much smarter than he got credit for. That's all I can think of for now. It's been quite a while since I've read PoA.
